Microsoft authenticator is a mobile app that allows you to easily sign-in to all your online platforms through password or passwordless autofill, and multi-factor authentication. The app also provides extra account management tools for your Microsoft school, work, or personal accounts.
Features
multi-factor authentication
Multi factor authentication (MFA), also known as two factor authentication (2FA) offers an extra layer of security to your mobile app. After logging in to a platform with multi-factor authentication, you will be asked to input your password, and another means of identification to prove it is you. A one-time password will be sent to the Microsoft authenticator. Input the one-time password generated by the app to login to your online account. The one-time password is usually active for about 30 seconds to ensure you don’t use the same password twice. You can link more than one account with the authenticator app, including Google, LinkedIn, GitHub, Dropbox, Amazon, Facebook, and other apps.
Passwordless
Passwordless involves logging in to your Microsoft account with your phone, and not your password. All you have to do is enter your username, and approve the message you receive on the app. You can use your Face ID, PIN, or fingerprint to offer a second layer of security. After signing in with two factor authentication (2FA), you will gain access to all your Microsoft services and products, including Office, Onedrive, Outlook, and other apps.
Autofill
You can also use the Microsoft Authenticator app to autofill passwords for you. Sign-in on the Passwords tab in the Authenticator app using your personal Microsoft account and start connecting your passwords. You can sync passes linked to Microsoft edge to the app. With the multi-factor authentication app, your passwords are protected and secured. You will have to provide extra identification using your PIN, Face ID, or fingerprint to access and autofill passwords on your device. The Microsoft Authenticator app also allows you to move passwords from Google Chrome and other important password managers on your device.
Microsoft personal, work or school accounts
You may have to download the Microsoft Authenticator in your school or work to access several apps, files, and emails. You can link your device to your organization through the app and add your school or work account. With Microsoft Authenticator, you can access certificate-based authentication by issuing a certificate on your device. This way, your company will be sure that the sign-in request is from a trusted source and provide easy places to Microsoft apps.
